Launch WhatsApp on your smartphone.
Tap "Settings" in the navigation bar, then tap "Chat Settings."
You'll see a switch labeled "Save Incoming Media." Toggle this ON if you would like to automatically download all media, or toggle it OFF if you do not want this feature.

Here you can choose when WhatsApp will automatically download media.

When using mobile data
